During this hands-on, self-paced workshop, a MathWorks engineer will introduce you to calling Python libraries from MATLAB as well as using MATLAB as a computational engine from Python applications. In addition, you can build Python packages from MATLAB programs (using MATLAB Compiler SDK). This allows you to integrate Python with MATLAB without switching your programming environment. Hands-on demos of common scenarios and workflows will be provided.

This workshop is aimed to all MATLAB users at the University. The integration capabilities are available to all members of the UMD community.

Prerequisites

Some basic familiarity with MATLAB is assumed. If you are not familiar with MATLAB or a bit rusty, you might wish to take the free self-paced MATLAB Onramp course from MathWorks (about 2 hours).

System Requirements

This is a bring-your-own-laptop style event. Before attending you want to have a recent version of MATLAB (ideally R 2022b), including the Compiler SDK, installed on your laptop This is available at no charge to members of the University of Maryland community on Terpware via the campus Total Academic Headcount license.

Resources

In case Terpware encounters issues, you may download a recent MATLAB version from the UMD MATLAB portal as hosted by MathWorks.

MATLAB supports the Python versions installed on the HPC; to configure MATLAB to use Python or to install a compatible Python version on your laptop see this link.

The MATLAB Engine for Python is installed on Zaratan and available after the command: &nbps; module load python   (and directly on the Zaratan web portal in an OpenOnDemand Jupyter notebook). To install it on your laptop, see the MATLAB Engine for Python installation instructions.
