In 2019, Google claimed to have achieved Quantum Supremacy after performing a quantum calculation that would take 100,000 years on a state-of-the-art classical supercomputer. However, in 2024 the same calculation was performed on a supercomputer in a shorter time and using less energy. Quantum computing offers a different, potentially superior, computing approach than classical computing but hardware limitations put any claim of quantum advantage in perspective, not at least because progress in classical computing allows for greatly improved emulation of quantum circuits.
