Autotuning has demonstrated the potential to improve portability between different HPC systems by automating tedious machine specific optimizations. In this talk, I will review some success stories of using auto-tuning. I will also talk about the challenges facing scaling auto-tuning up to larger applications and systems. Finally, I will describe how auto-tuning can be used adjust the accuracy of numeric computations to improve speed.
Jeffrey K. Hollingsworth is the interim Chief Information Officer of the University of Maryland. He is also a Professor of the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland, College Park and has an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. He received his PhD and MS degrees in computer sciences from the University of Wisconsin. He received a B. S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Hollingsworth's research seeks to develop a unified framework to understand the performance of large systems and focuses in performance measurement and auto tuning. He is Editor in chief of the journal Parallel Computing, was general chair of the SC12 conference, and is Chair of ACM SIGHPC.
