Simulating Cosmic Reionization with a Novel MPI/CUDA Ray Tracing Algorithm for GPUs

12:10 Wednesday, November 16

Understanding the epoch of reionization (EOR) is arguably one of the long sought next frontiers in our understanding of the universe that in the next few years will become a reality. We present simulations of reionization of the intergalactic medium performed using multi-frequecy 3-dimensional radiative transfer simulations in pre-computed cosmological volumes in the universe. The radiation transfer calculations are run on clusters of graphic processing units (GPUs) and parallelized using message passing interface (MPI) and CUDA kernels. The main scientific question we will focus on is understanding the impact of a bursty (episodic) mode of star formation on the reionization history, the optical depth to Thompson scattering measured by the Planck satellite, and current and future observations by HST and JWST of galaxies at redshifts >10.
